Digital Desk, Sydney. Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson feels Trevor Bayliss could be the next head coach of the Cricket Australia team. Andrew McDonald is currently the interim coach of the team, following the departure of Justin Langer as head coach.
While Watson expects McDonald to be a core part of the new coaching lineup, Bayliss’ international coaching experience is hard to ignore. Bayliss was Sri Lanka’s head coach from 2007–11, before working with England from 2015–19, where he guided them to win the Cricket World Cup at home.
I know about Trevor Bayliss’ experience, Watson said on the ICC Review Show. He has probably seen everything possible in cricket and I would love to get him a great opportunity. Andrew McDonald is a great coach and early in his career, but I would love to look to the experience of this interim period for the next phase of Australian cricket.
Watson praised Langer’s time as head coach, from pulling Australia out of the sandpaper controversy in 2018 to winning the T20 World Cup in the UAE and a 4-0 Ashes victory at home.
He further said, he (Langer) was able to be part of a team and did a great job in winning the T20 World Cup for the first time and winning the Ashes series 4-0 at home. It is an incredible achievement as a coach.
He further said, he did a fantastic job at a time when Australian cricket really needed someone who could tie the team together at that time, which Justin Langer did incredibly well.
The 40-year-old Watson felt Australia’s head coach in future could be divided into red ball and white ball.
