Couple fined for cutting down hills in Chittagong
The Department of Environment has fined a couple of Tk 10 lakh for cutting down a hill near the GEC junction in Chittagong.
After the hearing on Sunday, the director of the Chittagong Metropolitan Office of the Department of Environment. Nurullah Nuri fined Nurul Islam and his wife Mosammat Amina Akter, residents of Nur Ahmed Road area of the city.
Nurul Islam owns an organization called Arabian Corporation.
Mia Mahmudul Haque, deputy director of the department’s metropolitan office, told bdnews24.com that a team from the department visited the site on Friday after receiving allegations of cutting down hills in front of the National Housing Authority office at the GEC junction.
He said the inspection found evidence of cutting the hill owned by Nurul Islam with an excavator. Notice was given to attend the subsequent hearing.
Their representative Mohammad Ibrahim attended the hearing on Sunday and the two were fined Rs 10 lakh during the hearing held in his presence.
“On that day, a fine of five lakh rupees was immediately collected. The rest of the money was ordered to be paid by Monday, ”said Mahmudul.
